Alexandria, VA – October 18, 2021 – The Association of Government Accountants (AGA), in partnership with Kearney & Company, today unveiled its latest survey report of the oversight community — 2021 Inspector General Survey: Charting the Future of Independent Oversight. It captures insights from a momentous year when the oversight of trillions of dollars in pandemic relief came under the IGs’ purview and personnel shifted almost entirely to remote work. Results indicate extraordinary transformation in the IG community to meet challenges as a more unified, collaborative group than before.
“Through our interviews with IG community leaders, we heard about the creative use of technology, data and human resource sharing, and the efficient standup of the Pandemic Recovery Oversight Committee (PRAC). The community should be proud of its recent accomplishments,” said AGA CEO Ann Ebberts.
The survey was not taken in 2020 due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, AGA learned new challenges had emerged in the interim as top discussion points, including pandemic oversight and operational challenges, plus unprecedented risk to IG independence. Lingering challenges include IG vacancies; timely reporting; recruiting skilled professionals, particularly in technology and cybersecurity; and streamlined hiring.
“This year’s survey marks a pivotal time in the IG community, which adapted to meet pandemic challenges and is emerging stronger, more innovative and more collaborative,” said David Zavada, project director and senior partner at Kearney.
The survey involved three months of interviews ending in July 2021 with a cross-section of IGs from large and small federal agencies. It assessed the current oversight environment as well as evolving issues that may cause lasting impact.
